John Simon Ritchie, known as Sid Vicious, was born in 1957 and Nancy Spungen in 1958. Spungen, diagnosed with schizophrenia at 11, moved to New York and became entrenched in the punk scene. Vicious replaced Glen Matlock in the Sex Pistols in February 1977; tensions in the band and their relationship grew, and Spungen was even banned from the group's U.S. tour. By 1978 the couple lived together in London and later at New York's Chelsea Hotel, where their drug use intensified.
