Elsa was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008 but kept it from her boys until 2020, when symptoms became noticeable. She has described shielding them from worry and later praised Fernando for never treating her as anything but loved and supported.
Born in Boston and raised in Miami with parents Elsa and Fernando Sr. and brothers Alberto and Max, Fernando dedicated his December 2025 Heisman to his mother and leaned on her at the Indiana Hoosiers' January 2026 national championship. With health limiting travel, Elsa has still attended key games, and the family has raised funds for MS and launched the Mendoza Family Fund in April 2026. Ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, Fernando chose to watch the event at home in Miami so his family — especially his mom — could be comfortable together.
