A dramatic shakeup in the Trump orbit: after the director of the National Counterterrorism Center abruptly resigned over the war in Iran, the president publicly denounced him as weak. Read on to discover the full story!

Resignation and the Reason

On March 17 Joe Kent stepped down as NCTC director, posting on X that he could not in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Kent, who is 45, wrote that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States and suggested the conflict began under pressure from Israel and its American lobby. He urged the administration to reflect on the nation’s course.

Trump's Reaction

Speaking while meeting the Irish prime minister on St. Patrick’s Day, President Trump criticized Kent’s judgment and called him weak on security, saying it was "a good thing" Kent left. Trump had praised Kent when naming him to the post in 2025, citing his military and intelligence background, and the Senate later confirmed the nomination by a 52–44 vote.
